SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — More than 300 Maine Catholic youths convening in South Portland this weekend are celebrating beatification of Pope John Paul II.

The theme of this year’s annual Catholic Youth Convention is “Extreme Makeover-Soul Edition.” The theme makes reference to the popular ABC program, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”

The convention started Friday and is being held through Sunday in South Portland. The event includes worship, workshops and social activities designed to encourage youths to be fully active in their religious and spiritual life.

The teenagers are also celebrating the beatification of Pope John Paul II, which also takes place this weekend.
