UM High Altitude Ballooning schedules first launch

ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine High Altitude Ballooning group will have its first launch from 8:30 to 20:30 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at the Pittsfield Airport. It will be a two-balloon launch, with both balloons released nearly simultaneously.

The balloons are expected to reach an altitude of approximately 90,000 feet, and the payloads then will drop by parachute. Payloads will include experiments from students in the UMaine electrical and computer engineering department, as well as payloads from the University of Southern Maine and Maine Maritime Academy.

Abbot Community Playground Committee selling raffle tickets

ABBOT, Maine — The Abbot Community Playground Committee will hold a 50-50 raffle until noon Memorial Day, with proceeds supporting new playground equipment. Tickets are available from playground committee members or from the Abbot town office on Route 15.

The next meeting of the Abbot Community Playground Committee will be at 7 p.m. Friday, May 13, at the Abbot town office. Additional fundraising events, grant opportunities, the playground gardens and new playground equipment for the Donald Gourley Memorial Playground, located next to the town office, will be discussed.

Eat Out For A ‘Dam’ Good Reason in Old Town on April 30

OLD TOWN, Maine — The Hospitality Association of Husson University will present Eat Out For A “Dam” Good Reason & Help Fight Cancer from 5 p.m. to midnight Saturday, April 30, at the City Park Grill in Old Town. The eatery will donate a portion of all food sales to CancerCare of Maine.

Walk for Wishes to take place on May 21

BANGOR, Maine — The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine will hold its 11th annual Walk for Wishes at 10 a.m., registration at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at Cascade Park in Bangor.
