Jetport heating system draws visit from FAA official

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — A top Federal Aviation Administration official is visiting the Portland International Jetport to discuss the progress of the new geothermal system that will heat and cool the airport’s new terminal that is under construction.

FAA Associate Administrator for Airports Christa Fornarotto will meet with Airport Director Paul Bradbury on Friday and tour the new $75 million terminal expansion, the first phase of which is expected to open in October.

Fornarotto is getting an update on the terminal’s $3 million geothermal temperature control system, which taps the earth’s heat during the winter and its cool air during the summer. The system is expected to reduce the airport’s oil consumption by more than 50,000 gallons a year.
