When you look at the front page of the print edition of the Bangor Daily News this weekend, you’ll immediately notice something different. Instead of seeing the latest news from 2011, you will be transported back in time 100 years to the fateful day when fire ravaged much of downtown Bangor.

Using stirring words and images to describe what is known as the Great Fire of 1911, we will present you with a commemorative package that includes a special four-page pullout section featuring a map showing the scope of the damage, photographs of historic buildings that were lost and the structures that replaced them.

Visit our website at bangordailynews.com beginning Friday, April 29, and you will find even more images of the destruction and the rebuilding that followed as well as video interviews with experts on the fire.

Friday also marks the opening of a photo exhibit on the fire at the Bangor Public Library and the 100 Years of Hope organ concert, which will be held at 7:30 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church. Many more events marking the 100th anniversary of the fire are scheduled in the days and weeks ahead.

Be sure to read the Bangor Daily News in print and online for the most complete coverage of the Great Fire of 1911.
