Sparks leads Black Bears to shutout over Monks

STANDISH — Kylie Sparks scattered four hits and didn’t walk a batter while striking out three in leading the University of Maine to an 8-0 softball victory over Saint Joseph’s College Wednesday afternoon.

Jennifer Eberhardt doubled and singled with three RBIs for the Black Bears. Terren Hall doubled twice and knocked in a run and Margaret HIlton had a double, two singles and three runs scored. Kali Burnham and Jillian Benson both had two singles, an RBI and a run.

Danyelle Shufelt hit two singles to lead the Monks. Connie Grovo and Jill Howard also singled.

UMass Boston sweeps USM

At Boston, Maria Nasta homered and singled with three RBIs in helping the University of Massachusetts Boston to an 8-2 win over the University of Southern Maine of Gorham in Wednesday’s second game.

UMass Boston also won the first game 10-2.

In the first game, Maria Nasta tripled and singled with two runs for the Beacons. Sue Killilea doubled with two RBIs.

Anna Allard hit two singles and scored a run for the Huskies.

In the second game, Christina Polsonett hit a triple, two singles and scored three runs for UMass Boston.

Stefanie Stockwell hit three singles to lead the Huskies. Kayla Ferrara and Allard each doubled and singled.

At Brunswick, Kenny Destremps hit a solo home run in the 11th inning to lift Brandeis over Bowdoin College.

Sean O’Hare homered with four RBIs for Brandeis. Tony Deshler homered and singled with three RBIs.

John Lefeber led Bowdoin homered with two singles and two RBIs. Jordan Edgett singled twice with two RBIs.

At Babson Park, Mass., Tucker White hit three singles and a home run to drive in three runs and lead the University of Southern Maine of Gorham past Babson College.

Nick Grady had four singles and three RBIs for the Huskies, Mike Eaton homered with two singles and scored four runs and Forrest Chadwick had a homer, double and single with three runs.

Dave Ahern homered three times and knocked in four runs for Babson.

Bates sweeps Anna Maria

At Worcester, Mass., Chris Burke had a home run, three singles and four RBIs in powering Bates College of Lewiston to an 11-6 win over Anna Maria College in the first game.

Bates also won the second game 6-1.

In the first game, Jake Simon homered and singled with three RBIs for Bates and Mike Ciummei hit a two-run homer.

Jeff Kodys homered, doubled and singled for Anna Maria. Jeff Scafidi had a home run, two singles and two RBIs.

In the second game, Jake Simon had a two-run home run for Bates. Burke singled twice and scored.

Andy Fallon doubled and scored for Anna Maria.
