BANGOR, Maine — A man suspected of stealing DVDS from Target on Monday and then assaulting a store security officer as he fled was arrested and charged with robbery.

William J. Lever, 18, of Charleston was arrested in his hometown on Tuesday and taken to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor, where he remained Wednesday.

Police were able to identify Lever with the help of surveillance photographs and several tips from the public, according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards.

Lever was charged with robbery instead of simple theft because he allegedly assaulted the store officer, Edwards said.

Lever is awaiting his initial court appearance. If convicted he could face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
