FORT KENT, Maine — Taylor Pelletier, a senior at Fort Kent Community High School, is one of only eight students selected from more than 3,000 applicants nationwide as a regional Leadership Award Scholarship winner.

The award is co-sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and Herff Jones Inc.

“In the seven years that I have been principal, Community High School has never had a regional winner,” said Tim Doak.

Participating high school principals from across the country could nominate one

senior high student to compete. Winners were selected on the basis of their leadership skills; participation in service organizations and clubs; achievements in the arts and sciences; employment experience; and academic record.

They also were required to write an essay.

“Students like Pelletier stand out to bravely face the challenges of today and lead us to a better tomorrow,” said Gerald Tirozzi, NASSP executive director.

“In recognizing leadership in co-curricular activities as well as academic performance, the PLA scholarship recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education. Co-curricular activities are an essential part of the school curriculum,” Tirozzi said..

Taylor, the daughter of Kevin and Cheryl Pelletier, has been a member of the school Drama Club, vice president of her class three consecutive years, a four-year member of the school’s wrestling team, and she has maintained high honors through high school.

She also has committed time to various volunteer activities in the community and for

the school.

This fall she plans to attend University of Maine at Farmington to study elementary education.

NASSP administers the National Honor Society, the National Junior Honor Society, the National Elementary Honor Society and the National Association of Student Councils.
