MMA, UMF softball teams record playoff victories

CASTINE — Casey McCloskey tossed a complete game allowing one run on four hits with eight strikeouts to lead Maine Maritime Academy by Lyndon State College 3-1 in a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal softball game Tuesday..

The Mariners advance to play Thomas in the NAC Final Four on Friday at noon.

Mallery Stanley singled twice and knocked in a run for the Mariners. Leah Jackson hit a solo home run and Mckenzie Burke added two singles.

At Castleton, Vt., Lily Barry and McKell Barnes hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning to spark the University of Maine-Farmington by Castleton State College in a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal.

The Beavers advance to take on top-seeded Husson Friday at 10 a.m.

Emma Vaillancourt earned the win for the Beavers allowing one run on four hits with 11 strikeouts. Shannon Mitchell hit an RBI double while Bridget Flaherty chipped in with a double.

Southern Maine 23, Thomas 2

At Gorham, Tucker White hit two home runs and a single with eight RBIs as the University of Southern Maine rolled past Thomas College.

Christian Hamilton posted two doubles, a single and three RBIs for the Huskies. David Ricker homered and singled with two RBIs while Anthony Pisani doubled and singled with two RBIs. Forrest Chadwick chipped in with a triple, a single and an RBI.

Josh Nickerson led the Terriers with a double and two singles. Cody Vigue added an RBI double.

Bates sweeps UMF

At Lewiston, Dean Bonneau, Demitrios Gatzogiannis and A.J. DeBenedictis combined on a two-hit shutout as Bates College completed a sweep of the University of Maine-Farmington with a 9-0 win in the second game of a doubleheader.

The Bobcats won the first game 12-2.

In the first game, Chris Burke registered two singles, a double and an RBI to lead Bates. Griff Tewksbury hit a solo home run and a single while Mike Ciummei knocked in three runs. Gordy Webb chipped in with two RBIs.

Josh Garneau led the Beavers with a home run, two singles and two RBIs. Brian Kenkins singled twice while Connor McNeill doubled.
