Should the Legislature be reduced to one body?

Posted April 25, 2011, at 8:56 p.m.

This week, ClickBack asks editorial page readers a question inspired by the royal wedding, as well as questions about eliminating the Maine House of Representatives, suburban growth and highway billboards. To participate, visit bangordailynews.com.

This is the last week the BDN will offer the ClickBack feature. It was designed over three years ago to encourage readers of our print product to visit our then-newly revamped website. Traffic at our website is now up to 7.5 million page views per month, so we believe it is time to offer our opinion page readers a different, more in-depth interactive feature. Next week, we will launch The Maine Debate, a feature that will allow readers to discuss key issues with the BDN editorial board and one another, along with experts and advocates on these issues. Look for more details next week.

Should the Legislature be reduced to one body?

A bill to eliminate the Maine House of Representatives and leave the Legislature with one house of 151 members has won “ought to pass” committee approval. Would Maine be better served with a unicameral legislature? Would the state be better off with just one body to approve budgets and bills? Or does the current system allow for checks to bad ideas?

Some of the comments posted at ClickBack may be featured on Friday’s OpEd page.
