If you were British, would you pull the plug on the royals?

This week, ClickBack asks editorial page readers a question inspired by the royal wedding, as well as questions about eliminating the Maine House of Representatives, suburban growth and highway billboards. To participate, visit bangordailynews.com.

This is the last week the BDN will offer the ClickBack feature. It was designed over three years ago to encourage readers of our print product to visit our then-newly revamped website. Traffic at our website is now up to 7.5 million page views per month, so we believe it is time to offer our opinion page readers a different, more in-depth interactive feature. Next week, we will launch The Maine Debate, a feature that will allow readers to discuss key issues with the BDN editorial board and one another, along with experts and advocates on these issues. Look for more details next week.

If you were British, would you pull the plug on the royals?

The Brits still like their royal family, despite scandals and divorces, though their approval ratings have dropped over recent decades. With the wedding on Friday of Prince William and Kate Middleton, interest in the future of the British monarchy is again high. If you lived in the United Kingdom, would you favor keeping the monarchy and the royal family, or would you argue for eliminating it entirely from the government? Is it a matter of money? Or would it be on principle?

Some of the comments posted at ClickBack may be featured on Friday’s OpEd page.
