Imaginative Brewer 5th-graders destined for global competition

BREWER, Maine — Fifth-graders from Brewer’ s State Street School captured a first-place win at the Destination Imagination State Celebration on April 2. The team competed against regional winners from all over the state at the University of Maine in Orono. They are the only Brewer team ever to advance to the Global Competition.

This is the first year the Kandy Kids, the official name of Brewer’ s State Street team, have competed. Making their win even more impressive was the level of competition from other teams with a wealth of experience.

The children’ s challenge is called “ Versus Foiled Again.” It requires them to build a structure made only from foil, wood and glue to hold a maximum amount of weight and present a story about a character who is foiled. Their winning state structure held 05 pounds, but weighed just 20.4 grams. The Kandy Kids will head to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the Global finals May 25-28. To that end, they face another challenge: raising $10,000 for the trip by May 5.
