Maine fishermen to protest bluefin tuna quotas

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Maine’s bluefin tuna fishermen are expected to turn out in force at a hearing on proposed regulations that would cut their quotas for this year.

New England fishermen object to new rules they say are unfair to those who use harpoons or rods and reels.

According to U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, the overall U.S. quota for bluefin tuna would be decreased from about 948 metric tons to 858 tons, a cut she says would be harmful to Maine’s bluefin fishermen.

Monday’s hearing is at 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland.
