BANGOR, Maine — A 28-year-old Massachusetts man is pleading guilty to manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend’s 15-month-old son in exchange for a murder charge against him being dropped.

Edgard Anziani is scheduled to appear Thursday in Penobscot County Superior Court.

Anziani was indicted on murder and manslaughter charges in the Feb. 23, 2010, death of Damien Lynn, son of 22-year-old Cheryl Metzger of Bangor. Anziani told police the baby fell down some stairs while he was babysitting him at Metzger’s apartment, but the state medical examiner concluded the injuries weren’t consistent with a fall.

Deputy Attorney General Bill Stokes says Anziani agreed to an “open” plea agreement, meaning prosecutors can ask the judge for any sentence they see fit. Manslaughter in Maine carries a maximum sentence of 30 years.
