WINTERPORT, Maine — A three-car accident Wednesday afternoon on Route 1 sent three people to the hospital with minor injuries and caused about $8,000 in vehicle damage.
The collision began when Jasmine Roney, 16, of Palmyra, who was heading south, attempted to turn onto Apple Lane a little before 4 p.m., according to the accident report from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.
Her 1998 Dodge four-door car crashed head-on into a 2007 Dodge sedan that was driven by Matthew D. Cooper, 21, of Winterport, the police report said.
Although Sheri A. Littlefield, 34, of Swanville attempted to drive around the crash in her 2001 Toyota sedan, Roney’s vehicle spun around and struck the Toyota’s back end.
Roney and passenger Sarah Hobart, 17, no address available, suffered minor injuries, and a passenger in Cooper’s car complained of pain, police reported. All three were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for treatment.
The accident did not cause the busy road to close, but Fire Department members assisted sheriff’s personnel in reducing traffic to one lane for a “short period of time” before the scene was cleared of cars, said Chief Deputy Robert Keating.
It didn’t appear that speed was a factor, but the accident was under investigation, he said Thursday. No charges had been filed.
Damage to the three cars was estimated at $3,500 for Roney’s, $4,000 for Cooper’s and $500 for Littlefield’s, according to the accident report.
