Portland Chief James Craig says he is not trying to get out of Maine, but the position in the much larger city of Cincinnati would be a good opportunity.

Cincinnati officials say Craig is one of 37 candidates being considered.

Cincinnati has a population of about 330,000. Portland has a population of about 64,000. The current chief in Cincinnati is retiring.

The 54-year-old Craig has been chief in Portland since May 2009.

Craig came to the Portland police department from Los Angeles.

He tells the Portland Press Herald he has no inside track for the position in Cincinnati. Craig says he is just one candidate among many.
