PORTLAND, Maine — A World War II veteran from Maine has gotten some long overdue medals for his military service decades ago.

George Chapman, of York, was a staff sergeant with Headquarters and Headquarters Co. 1102nd Combat Engineers Group.

Sen. Olympia Snowe presented Chapman the Bronze Star and a number of other medals and awards at her Portland office on Tuesday.

“I am deeply grateful for George’s service on behalf of our nation, and am pleased to offer him a belated but much deserved ‘thank you’ for his courage and selfless sacrifices during World War II,” said Snowe.
