By Meg Haskell, BDN Staff

BREWER, Maine  — Twenty-eight New England health care systems, including Brewer-based Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems and Portland-based MaineHealth, have joined forces in a new purchasing company, the Northeast Purchasing Coalition LLC.

According to a statement released Tuesday by EMHS, the company represents more than 100 hospitals across all six New England states and is chaired by EMHS Executive Vice President and CFO Dan Coffey.

As a member of VHA, Inc., based in Irving, Texas, the Northeast Purchasing Coalition aims to save money in the regional health care system by negotiating lower purchasing costs and standardizing clinical utilization.

VHA currently supports 23 purchasing networks nationwide, including more than 1,400 hospitals and more than 28,000 non-acute care providers. Combined, these supply networks

saved participants $100 million in 2010, according to the statement released Tuesday.
