ROCKPORT, Maine — For the first time, applicants to Bay Chamber’s Young Stars of Maine Scholarship Program and Young Stars of Maine Scholarship Program can apply using just one form. To apply for either program, download the application form at www.baychamberconcerts.org or call 236-2823 to have one sent by mail.

For 50 years, the annual Young Stars of Maine prize program has recognized, encouraged and rewarded young Maine music students who are serious in their study and performance of music. Eight $1,000 prizes are awarded to solo and ensemble musicians in classical and jazz music.

The 2011 Next Generation Summer Chamber Music Program offers young musicians the opportunity to study chamber music under the direction of professional chamber musicians.

Scholarship winners will perform in a concert at the historic Rockport Opera House as part of Bay Chamber’s Summer Music Festival. Bay Chamber will determine which scholarships applicants are eligible to receive.

Solo classical players of all instruments and vocalists are encouraged to apply. There also are prizes for chamber and jazz ensembles. Ensembles share the $1,000 prize. Each recorded audition will be reviewed, and invitations to live auditions will be sent to selected individuals. Live auditions will be adjudicated by a panel of four music professionals.

Coaching will be provided by Dr. Patricia Stowell, Gilda Joffe, Malcolm Brooks and other professional faculty, with additional master classes and workshops offered by members of Curtis on Tour and Curtis Institute Director Roberto Diaz.

The daily schedule is 9 a.m.-4 p.m., with an hour lunch break. Coaching each day will be balanced with time for music composition and orchestra. This year’s program will conclude with a performance for family and friends on the final afternoon of the program. Participants must provide their own housing, and students must bring a lunch each day. Beverages and snacks will be provided.

The program is open to musicians, ages 10-18, and  to wind, string, brass, piano and vocal applicants as well as pre-formed ensembles.   All levels of ability will be welcomed to the program on a first come, first served basis with total enrollment limited to 7 ensembles, three of which may include piano. Previous participants are not guaranteed admittance.

Application is by recorded audition due April 30.
