Federal taxes due April 18, despite Patriot’s Day

Mainers used to getting an extra day to file their returns should know that federal taxes are due Monday, April 18 even though it is Patriot’s Day.

The holiday, celebrated in Maine and Massachusetts in observance of the Battles of Lexington and Concord during the American Revolution, has traditionally delayed tax day for residents of those two states.

However, paper returns are no longer processed in the IRS’ Andover, Mass., facility, eliminating that reprieve, according to an IRS spokeswoman.

Mainers still have an extra day to file their state tax returns.

Need more time? Ask for a six-month extension to file your federal tax returns.
