ROCKLAND — The Rockland Community Development Department, in conjunction with Rockland Main Street Inc. and Wright-Pierce Engineers of Topsham, will hold a public information meeting on the proposed Thorndike Parking Area Project at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 21, in the Rockland City Council Chambers, 270 Pleasant St. The city of Rockland is applying for a Communities for Maine’s Future Bond Program grant to fund the project.

The Thorndike Parking Area Project will include improvements to pedestrian sidewalks, curbing and street lighting in the parking lot area located behind Main Street and accessed via Tillson Avenue. This project will make the parking lot area safer and open up the rear basement levels of Main Street buildings for use as shops, galleries and restaurants. It also will connect the Harbor Trail to the downtown area.

The local match for the project will be provided by Community Development Block Grant funds, a Green Downtown Trail Planning Grant obtained by Rockland Main Street Inc., private donations and in-kind contributions.

At the meeting, preliminary design plans along with project costs, financing and phasing will be presented, and city staff and project engineers will be available to answer questions as well as solicit public comment on the project. Downtown business and building owners and members of the public are encouraged to attend.

The CMF Bond Program is part of a $25,000,000 bond initiative approved by Maine voters on June 8, 2010. CMF has been allocated $3.5 million to provide funding through matching grants to eligible Maine communities for downtown or village center community infrastructure projects which promote sustainable development, with emphasis on collaboration with private sector and nonprofit partners. Projects will be evaluated in terms of economic development, downtown revitalization, historic preservation, tourism development, sustainable development, the degree of collaboration, and more. Application deadline is July 1.
