500-plus compete in Patriot’s Day race in Maine

PORTLAND, Maine — Rain and wind subsided in time for the 82nd Patriots Day 5-Mile race, and Louie Luchini finished ahead of the pack of more than 500 runners in Portland, Maine.

Luchini, of Ellsworth, cruised to a win Sunday in 24 minutes, 20 seconds, nearly two minutes ahead of runner-up Josh Zolla of Freeport. Zolla came in at 26:07, and Chris Harmon of Scarborough placed third (26:29). Among women racers, Heidi Westover won for the second time in 29:29.

The race is said to be the oldest in the state and one of the oldest in New England. Proceeds benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Maine.
