ROCKPORT — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine recently hosted more than 250 Bigs, Littles, families and friends in celebration of their successful matches. The annual Program Celebration took place March 26 at the Penobscot Bay YMCA.
Awards were given to recognize outstanding matches of the year for school-based mentoring and community-based mentoring. Big Brother Noah Holt of Camden Hills Regional High School and his Little Brother Brian Gunn of Hope Elementary School were recognized as School-Based Match of the Year. Big Brother Lee Emmons of South Bristol and his Little Brother Zach Smith of Newcastle were recognized as the Community-Based Match of the Year.
A special “Never Miss Life” award was given to Big Sister Kay Liss of Jefferson and her Little Sister ArizonaLee Crooker of Jefferson. The award was given in memory of Little Sister Jessi Breault of Knox, who with her mother died in a car accident earlier this year.
Five matches were recognized for being matched four years or more.
In addition to the awards presentation, participants used the YMCA rock climbing wall, main pool, gymnasium and play gym for the evening. Refreshments for the event were provided by Dominos, Pizza Hut and Tim Hortons of Rockland. The evening ended with Littles taking swipes at several pinatas made by matches at Captain Albert Stevens School in Belfast and Hope Elementary School. The Program Celebration was sponsored by Key Bank.
