BANGOR, Maine — Someone driving down Buck Street around 10:30 a.m. Monday called police to report a woman being mugged by a man, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said.

“Someone thought she was being mugged, [but] it was really a simple domestic violence with him as the aggressor,” the sergeant said.

Officer Brian Smith interviewed the two people involved and determined that Phillip Smith, 27, of Bangor had hit the woman, whose age and hometown were not available, Edwards said.

“There was blood on his knuckles,” said Edwards, adding that the victim also had blood on her hands.

Smith, who has been arrested by Bangor police in the past for theft and outstanding warrants, according to Edwards, was arrested Monday for domestic violence assault and taken to Penobscot County Jail.

The female victim, who was uncooperative with police, the sergeant said, made obscene gestures and then walked away down Buck Street after Smith was placed into a police cruiser.
