Theatrical rummage sale planned

BELFAST — When the Belfast Maskers stage a theatrical rummage sale, you know it will be out of the ordinary, starting with the costumed actors who will mingle with shoppers, offering encouragement, advice and entertainment.

The Belfast Maskers Theater, on Belfast’s waterfront, will host the sale in an effort to thin out its overstuffed costume lofts from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23.

Along with everyday pants, sweaters and jackets, shoppers will find exotic one-of-a-kind items, such as a heavy, ethnic woolen patchwork garment in earthy tones, or a purple tweed cape from Ireland. Vintage style is “in,” and one lucky shopper could walk out with a Givenchy red-and-black silk dress, perhaps topped off a fur stole — several furs are being offered. Or how about a knee-length black vest, heavily crusted with tiny ivory beads?

And hats. Hats galore. Some are perfect for children’s dress-up, others could add the finishing touch to a vintage outfit.

“The costume loft has been filled to overflowing for quite some time,” said Aynne Ames, artistic director of the community theater company. “This gives us a great chance to reorganize and make space and give people a chance to pick up bargains and some outrageously fun outfits.”
