Outlook: The Black Bears hope to begin building some momentum as they stretch their streak of consecutive road games to open the season to 32. UMaine is coming off a series at Stony Brook during which it could have split, but went 1-3. Hartford has struggled and opened league play by getting swept by Albany last weekend. The Hawks are hitting only .233 as a team and rank last in AE with an 8.82 team ERA. Hartford has committed 56 errors in 24 games. UMaine also has been inconsistent offensively, batting .268.

Softball

MAINE vs. ALBANY

Time, site: Saturday (2), 1 p.m., Sunday, 11 a.m.; Kessock Field, Orono

Records: Maine 16-22 (6-3 America East), Albany 14-18 (5-1 AE)

Last meeting: Albany 6-3 on 4/19/10

Top hitters: Maine — LF Kali Burnham (.355-2 HR-18 RBI, 7 doubles), SS Jennifer Eberhardt (.320-3-17, 27 runs, 7 doubles), 3B Terren Hall (.315-7-29, 7 SB), DH Meghan McLain (.288-3-10); Albany — 1B Gina Mason (.378-3-17, 34 hits), SS Andrianna Walraven (.292-2-16, 13 SBs), LF Diane MacDowell (.263-0-4, 21 SBs, 19 runs), C Kyle Apostolina (.242-0-9)

Pitching matchups: Maine — RH Ashley Kelley (4-10, 4.18 ERA), RH Beth Spoehr (8-8, 3.92), RH Kylie Sparks (4-4. 2.90); Albany — RH Brittany MacFawn (8-5, 2.32, 91 Ks), RH Brittany Schweiger (4-7, 2.42, 70 Ks), RH Allie Weiser (2-6, 2.88)

Outlook: The league-leading Great Danes have won five of their last six and eight of their last 10. They have three quality pitchers in two-time America East Pitcher of the Week MacFawn, who is only a freshman, junior Schweiger and sophomore Weiser, an All-AE rookie team selection a year ago. MacFawn and Schweiger have averaged over a strikeout per inning and MacFawn has walked just 11 in 87 2/3 innings. Opponents are hitting just .232 against the Albany staff. All-AE first-teamer Mason is their offensive catalyst with MacDowell and Walraven supplying them with legitimates stolen base threats. Maine will need Kelley to regain her all-conference form of a year ago after a slow start. They will also need a strong start from the vastly improved Spoehr.
