Mayo Regional Hospital volunteers feted at dinner

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — Instead of running errands and doing chores for staff members at Mayo Regional Hospital on Thursday afternoon, about 50 volunteers were pampered by the hospital staff itself.

In recognition of National Volunteer Week, April 10-16, the hospital staff feted the volunteers with a turkey and roast pork dinner and thanked them for their dedicated service.

“The hospital would not be what it is today without the volunteers,’’ Lillian Smith, coordinator of the volunteers, said Thursday. Patients and the staff are very appreciative of the volunteer efforts, she noted.

Smith said 64 volunteers provided 10,765 hours of service in 2010. From 1978 to 2010, volunteers gave 298,313 hours of service to the hospital, she added.

Pauline Albee of Guilford and Maude Rees of Sangerville, who turn 90 this year, were among the volunteers recognized.

Ralph Gabarro, the hospital’s chief executive officer, and Gregory Bowler, Hospital Administrative District 4 president, both thanked the volunteers for their contributions. Gabarro said Mayo has a ‘’strong personality’’ in part because of the volunteers. He said many patients and their families have commented to him about how appreciative they are of the assistance from the volunteers.

Jane Stitham, director of Pine Tree Hospice, also expressed her thanks to those who give of themselves to help comfort those near the end of their lives. She called what the volunteers give to others in need “mind blowing.”
