DEXTER, Maine — The Dexter Regional High School Key Club has been named one of the top 50 Key Clubs in the nation and one of the top five of the 179 clubs in the New England District.

Earlier this month, the club, in its 13th year, returned from the New England District Key Club Convention with 13 awards, among them Outstanding Club President awarded to Chelsea Crane, first place Annual Achievement Award, first place Partners in Service Award, and first place Essay Contest.

‘’Everybody knows about us and I think there is a lot of pride in the community,’’ Rick Whitney, the club’s adviser, said Thursday. Club members have been so influential, he added, that other clubs have adopted some of their activities, including the annual Welcome to My Home, an overnight event held in October to raise awareness of the plight of the homeless and the club’s annual 30-hour fast.

The 54 Dexter Key Club members in 2010-11 have donated 3,497 service hours and made $12,977 in charitable donations.
