AUGUSTA — An acrylic painting of a resting pair of wood ducks by Rebekah LaCourse of Hollis Center will appear on the 2011 Maine Waterfowl Stamp.

LaCourse’s original painting recently was judged the winner of the annual Maine Waterfowl Stamp Contest, conducted by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife that is open to all Maine artists.

This was the first year the department introduced an “Open Category,” where the artist could choose to paint any of the following five ducks species: Black Duck, Wood Duck, Green-winged Teal, Blue-winged Teal or Northern Pintail. In previous years, artists were asked to feature a specific duck species selected by the department.

LaCourse is a children’s book illustrator.  She is an alumna of the Rhode Island School of Design where she holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration degree.  Her depiction of a pair of Wood Ducks was her fifth entry into the contest.

Second place was awarded to artist Thomas K. Merriam of Lovell and third place went to Rick Alley of Islesford.  Artists Emily Camp of Farmingdale and Michael Loring of Windham both received Honorable Mention awards.

Contest judges were MDIF&W Deputy Commissioner Andrea Erskine, Artist Olga Wing (who won the contest in 2010), MDIF&W Information Specialist and artist Ralph Brissette, and Churchill Barton and Tom Duff from Ducks Unlimited, Inc.

The winning artist receives a cash award of $1,000 for her painting.  The subject for the 2012 contest again will be an “Open Category” with the following diving duck species for artists to choose from:  Greater or Lesser Scaup, Ring-necked Duck, Common Goldeneye, Barrow’s Goldeneye, or Bufflehead.

Waterfowl stamps are not only sold to duck hunters but also to stamp collectors throughout the world.  For more information, call (207) 287-5244 or visit the Department’s website at www.mefishwildlife.com.
