Belfast Jazz Jam seeking musicians, singers

Posted April 12, 2011, at 11:35 a.m.

BELFAST — The Third Sunday Jazz Jam, featuring a rhythm section and musicians from around Waldo County and the midcoast, will take place 3-5 p.m. Sunday, April 17, in the Fallout Shelter Cafe at Waterfall Arts. Playing jazz standards and favorites, new requests, and old chestnuts, musicians of all ages and levels who love music and improvisation are invited to bring their instruments and voices and play.

The rhythm section — guitar, piano, bass and drums — begins with a short warm-up concert, and then the jam begins, featuring the work of vocalists, saxophonists, trumpet, trombone and guitar.

A preliminary informal “woodshed” session will begin at 2 p.m. for musicians who would like to work with guitarist Bill Barnes on a standard or original piece — working through harmony, chord voicings and soloing over the chord changes.

Jazz is an evolving art that needs honing on all levels, and both young and old players are encouraged to participate. Refreshments and finger food will be available. A donation of $5 is requested for those who come to listen.
