Gold Star awarded to Pen Bay Medical Center for tobacco-free policies

ROCKPORT — Pen Bay Medical Center is one of 19 hospitals that were recognized by the Maine Tobacco-Free Hospital Network at the 2011 Gold Star Standards of Excellence Awards Celebration. These hospitals have taken steps to make their campuses tobacco-free and support tobacco-free lifestyles for their employees, patients and the community. Last year, Pen Bay was awarded a Silver Star; this year, the organization received its first Gold Star.

In addition, Pen Bay congratulated Carla-Jo Kaler of Pen Bay Cardiac Testing despartment, who was awarded an individual Gold Star. She has been a facilitator of the FreshStart tobacco cessation program for community members since 2007. She also offers individual cessation counseling to both inpatients and those coming to the Pen Bay Cardiac Testing Unit, where she works as a cardiology technician.
