Mass. seeking federal funds to replace rail bridge

The Associated Press

BOSTON — The Deval Patrick administration is seeking more than $98 million in federal transportation funds to help replace a rail bridge in Haverhill that provides Amtrak Downeaster service between Boston and Portland, Maine.

Massachusetts Transportation Secretary Jeffrey Mullan said Tuesday that replacing the bridge will help improve high-speed and intercity rail service in the state and across New England.

The bridge also serves the MBTA’s Haverhill commuter line.

If approved by the federal Department of Transportation, the grant would pay for the final design and replacement of the bridge.

Mullan said the goal is to expand service and improve on-time performance for both Amtrak regional and commuter rail lines.

The application was made under the federal High-Speed and Intercity Passenger Rail program.
