Fire damages Milbridge gas station

By Bill Trotter, BDN Staff

MILBRIDGE, Maine —- A fire of unknown origin Monday night has resulted in the closure of the town’s only gas station, according to the local fire chief.

How long Milbridge Gulf, which also includes a cafe and convenience store, might be closed is unknown, Milbridge Fire Chief Peter Sawyer said Tuesday. He said the nearest gas stations are located in Steuben and Cherryfield.

Sawyer said employees closed the business at 8 p.m. Monday and left, about 45 minutes before the fire was reported by a neighbor. Firefighters were on the scene less than five minutes later, he said, and found smoke and flames coming out from under the roof on the building’s north end.

Sawyer said the building used to have a flat roof, but that two years ago the owners, Bill and Amy Houck of Steuben, built a new pitched roof over it. He said the majority of the fire was in the space between the two roofs.

It took firefighters about three hours to contain the fire, Sawyer said. He said the building, which was insured, might be salvageable.

“They would have to put a whole roof back on,” the fire chief said.

An attempt Tuesday afternoon to contact the Houcks by phone at their home was unsuccessful.

Sawyer said firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the gas pumps outside the building or to vents from the underground fuel storage tanks.

Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office were at the scene Tuesday, but had not determined the cause of the fire, according to Sawyer. He said it does not appear to be suspicious.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the blaze, the chief said. He said a total of 28 firefighters from Milbridge, Cherryfield, Harrington and Steuben responded to the fire.

Sawyer said firefighters kept watch at the scene all night to make sure there were no flare-ups.
