Brewer man faces nine charges in connection with harassment

BANGOR, Maine — A Brewer man was charged with nine different offenses last week, including two felonies, after he continued to harass an ex-girlfriend who had filed a protection from abuse order against him, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday.

Joshua McGilvray, 25, had been sought by police after the 22-year-old victim reported on March 23 that he had thrown snowballs at her house.

At around 12:30 p.m. March 25, police were called to Husson University, where the victim is a student, after her ex-boyfriend was seen on campus looking for her, Edwards said.

Police caught up with McGilvray at about 1:45 p.m. March 28 when he texted the victim that he was going to be on campus and Husson security saw him sitting in his car, the sergeant said.

Sgt. Cathy Rumsey and Officer Kyle Pelkey pulled in front of McGilvray’s car, but he “threw the car into gear and backed up over the lawn” to escape, Edwards said. After a short car chase and then a foot chase over to Broadway, someone from Dunkin’ Donuts called to say McGilvray was in the coffee shop’s restroom.

McGilvray was charged with felony aggravated driving to endanger and eluding an officer as well as misdemeanor harassment. He was charged with three counts of violating a protection order and three counts of violating his bail conditions for the three separate incidents.

The protection order was put into place after March 8 when McGilvray was charged with  domestic violence assault, criminal mischief and obstructing the report of a crime for reportedly breaking a mirror at his girlfriend’s Bangor apartment, shaking her and blocking her exit, Edwards has said.

When the March 8 police report was filed, McGilvray lived with the victim on Moosehead Boulevard.

If convicted of either felony — the aggravated driving to endanger or eluding an officer — McGilvray could face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
