Newburgh calls emergency meeting Friday to prepare election ballot

By Christopher Cousins, BDN Staff

NEWBURGH, Maine — An emergency meeting of the Newburgh Board of Selectmen — which consists of only one person — is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at the former Newburgh Elementary School, which now contains the town office.

Mike Burns, who has been the only selectman since early March when he ousted one selectman and the other two resigned, said the purpose of Friday’s meeting is to prepare a ballot for the April 13 election. Five candidates have submitted petitions to have their names on the ballot and will vie for the two seats vacated by Leonard Belcher and Leona Smith. The candidates for a two-year post are Steve Burgess and Cindy Prescott. Candidates for a one-year seat are Charles Gibbs, Jeff Watson and Craig Toothaker.

The polls will be open at the town office from 2 to 7 p.m. April 13.
