WARREN, Maine — A 24-year-old woman died Tuesday afternoon when her car and another vehicle hit head-on.

Nora Synnefakis of South Portland was driving north on Route 1 near Sterling Road when a truck veered into her lane and struck her, according to police. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, Monte Edelstein, 64, of Newcastle was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland on Tuesday afternoon, where he remained Wednesday.

Edelstein has not been charged with any crimes, according to Knox County Sheriff Office Chief Deputy Tim Carroll. The matter is under investigation by Maine State Police.

It’s unclear why Edelstein’s 2004 Toyota Tacoma veered from the southbound lane into oncoming traffic. Alcohol, drugs and speed are not considered factors yet, Carroll said. Blood tests will be conducted on both drivers.

The crash shut traffic down on Route 1 in Warren for about three hours Tuesday.

Knox County Sheriffs Office, Maine State Police, Waldoboro Fire Department and Thomaston Police responded.
