BOSTON — Weather forecasters say a springtime snowstorm is likely to dump as much as a foot of wet, heavy snow and rain in the Northeast just ahead of April Fools’ Day.

The National Weather Service says the storm is expected to hit Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine from late Thursday through Friday evening.

Eastern New York is expected to get 6 to 10 inches of snow. Much of northern New Jersey could see snow on the ground Friday morning.

Forecasters say high-altitude areas of western and central Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire and central Vermont will receive up to a foot of snow. Coastal areas of Rhode Island, Maine and Massachusetts will mostly see rain.

Most of the snow in Massachusetts probably will be washed away by rain.
