Chadwick propels USM baseball past MIT


WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Forrest Chadwick singled, doubled and homered to knock in two runs Wednesday and lead the University of Southern Maine of Gorham to a 7-4 baseball victory over the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Matt Powers and Dustin Stanton combined for 6 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for the Huskies. They struck out nine, walked none and allowed five hits. Mike Eaton homered and singled with two runs scored, Tucker White had a double and two RBIs and Josh Mackey singled twice. Ricardo Perez hit a three-run triple in the third for MIT.

Johns Hopkins 15, Thomas 8

At Phoenix, Ariz., Jesse Sikorski hit a home run and a single with three RBIs and Mike Denlinger was a homer shy of the cycle as Johns Hopkins topped Thomas College of Waterville.

The Blue Jays scored 11 times in the sixth to take the lead. Chris Wilhelm had a triple, two singles and three RBIs and Denlinger also knocked in three runs. Eric Sucy hit three singles and drove in two runs to pace the Terriers. Ben Goodall had two singles and two RBIs and Cody Vigue added two singles.

Southern Maine loses two

At Clermont, Fla., Kristen Anderson tossed a no-hitter in leading Trinity College (Conn.) to an 8-0 shutout win over the University of Southern Maine of Gorham in Wednesday’s second game. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater beat the Huskies 10-1 in the first game.

In the first game, Laura Eichenold doubled, singled and drove in three runs to lead Wisconsin-Whitewater. Lauren Rankins added three RBIs and Haley Krueger tripled and singled with two RBIs.

Stefanie Stockwell hit two singles and scored the only run for the Huskies. Annie Mitchell hit an RBI single in the third inning.

In the second game, Anderson allowed two walks and struck out one in earning the win for Trinity. Nicole Nardella had a double, single, four RBIs and two runs scored.
