Many people prefer to hydrate with bottled or filtered water, eschewing tap water for what they say is the chlorine or other assortment of tastes associated with water purification.
If you’re a fan of bottled water yet have a twinge of environmental guilt over the use of so many disposable plastic bottles, there is an option.
New from CamelBak is the “Groove” a portable filtration system that filters tap water into pleasant-tasting water. Contained within its 20-ounce, BPA-free bottle is a carbon filter that makes ordinary tap water enjoyable by reducing the taste of chlorine and odors.
This system is ecofriendly as the carbon filters are designed to filter up to 180 liters. That’s the equivalent of 375 disposable plastic bottles. The CamelBak is easy to refill and easy to use with a filter built into the straw and bite valve that allows you to sip with ease, then flip shut for storage with no spills.
It is not intended for backcountry use. It is not designed to filter viruses and microorganisms. For that you need a water filter or purification system designed for that purpose. Such tools are made by MSR, Katadyn, SteriPEN and others.
The Groove is durable and dishwasher-safe. CamelBak recommends you clean it regularly by removing the carbon filter, pull off the bite valve and straw, and place the bottle in the top rack of your dishwasher.
To clean the bite valve and straw place them in a jar with a drop of mild detergent and tightly close the jar’s lid. Shake the mixture around for 30 seconds, and then let the parts soak for about 15 minutes. Rinse and shake dry.
CamelBak says not to wash the carbon filter. If you accidentally run it through the dishwasher, discard and replace it with a new one.
