Sangerville proposed municipal budget up $184,477

SANGERVILLE, Maine — Selectmen have proposed a 2011 budget of $1,791,349 that includes the purchase of a backhoe and trailer and the addition of a half-year position to help with summer  road maintenance and ditching.

Residents will act on the budget at the annual town meeting, scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, March 26, at the fire station. A dinner by donation will be served at noon by the Sangerville Historical Society.

At last year’s town meeting, residents approved a budget of  $1,578,622, which was adjusted upward during a special town meeting later in the year to $1,606,872, according to Town Manager Michelle Dumoulin.

Dumoulin said she has proposed financing the $39,000 backhoe and trailer over three years. She said the town now spends about $8,000 on equipment rental, and by buying the new piece of equipment it will save money in the long run.

She also has proposed $220,000 to address town roads. She said a proposed road plan suggests that the town maintain its good roads first. ‘’If you let them deteriorate to a reconstruction stage, it actually costs you 30 times more than in the earlier stages, so we’re looking to maintain our good roads, Dumoulin said.

Town officials have proposed the use of $396,413 from surplus to help offset the tax commitment. That will leave $489,903 in the surplus account, according to Dumoulin.
