MDI’s Bunky Dow earns state merit award

Alfred “Bunky” Dow, director of student activities at Mount Desert Island High School in Bar Harbor, will be presented the 2011 State Award of Merit by the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association during that organization’s annual state conference April 7 at the Samoset Resort in Rockport.

Since graduating from Husson College in 1983, Dow has spent his entire career at MDI, coaching different levels of baseball, basketball, football, girls soccer and softball at the school and serving as student activities director since 1990.

He also has been secretary of the Penobscot Valley Conference, and currently is the PVC chair for baseball, softball and outdoor track after previously working in the same capacity for cheering and freshman basketball.

Dow also is the president of the Big East basketball conference.

At the state level, Dow has served on the Maine Principals’ Association cheering and softball committees and chairs the MPA’s classification committee.

His service to the MIAAA includes being a member of its executive committee and serving as the organization’s president in 2003-04. Dow is the MIAAA’s associate director, and he has attended two national conferences and taken numerous NIAAA leadership training classes.
