Cape Elizabeth girl wins state spelling bee for 2nd straight year

PORTLAND, Maine — An eighth-grade student from Cape Elizabeth has won the Maine State Spelling Bee for the second straight year and will represent the state in the national spelling bee this spring.

According to the Maine Sunday Telegram, Lily Jordan spelled the word “rotunda” to advance in the 15th round of Saturday’s competition at the University of Southern Maine to outlast 15 other students from each county in the state.

Michaela Wright of Rockland came in second.

Jordan will represent Maine at the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee, to be held June 1 and 2 in Washington.
