Maine baseball drops opener of series

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — The University of Maine Black Bears went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base as the Rider University Broncs pulled out a 3-2 baseball victory Friday in the first game of a four-game set.
A wild pitch and an error helped lead to the eventual winning run in the seventh inning for Rider.
Taylor Lewis tripled and singled with an RBI while freshman Eric White of Brewer singled twice and knocked in a run for UMaine. Joey Martin of Portland added two singles.
Kevin Scanlan (0-1) took the loss, giving up one run in two-thirds of an inning in relief of A.J. Bazdanes. Sean Coughlin worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings to finish the game.
A.J. Albee doubled, singled and knocked in two runs to pace Rider, while Brandon Cotten and Ian Lindsay each singled twice.
Chris Taylor (2-1) picked up the win with an inning of scoreless relief to back starter Mike Thomas. Tyler Smith worked 1 2/3 shutout innings to earn the save.
Rider took the lead for good in the seventh when John Ralston led off with a double and took third on a wild pitch by Scanlan. Cotten reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, setting the stage for Karl Johnston’s sacrifice fly.
Coughlin came on to retire the next two batters.
The Broncs took a 1-0 lead in the first on a single, two of UMaine’s five wild pitches and Albee’s double. The hosts made it 2-0 in the third when Johnston worked a one-out walk, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Albee’s single.
UMaine scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to draw even. In the sixth, Fran Whitten walked, Alex Calbick singled and both moved up on Tyler Patzalek’s sacrifice bunt.
One out later, White singled to left to bring in a run. After White stole second, Colin Gay struck out to end the inning.
The Bears made it 2-2 in the seventh on a leadoff single by Fransoso and Lewis’ one-out triple to right-center.
The series resumes today with a noon doubleheader.

Guilford sweeps UMF

At Greenville, N.C., UMaine-Farmington was swept by Guilford College in a doubleheader, 26-5 and 10-6.
In the first game, Guilford scored 15 second-inning runs to roll to the win.
Forrest Steed hit a grand slam, two singles and drove in seven runs for the winners.
Ed Flaherty singled in two runs to lead the Beavers.
In the second game, Derek Hardison doubled and tripled to drive in two runs to lead Guilford.
Brian Jenkins and Jack Macvane had three singles and Josh Garneau two singles and two RBIs for UMF.

Cortland St. 18, USM 15

At Auburndale, Fla., Cortland plated four runs in the top of the 11th inning to hold on for the win over Southern Maine.
Matt June and Don Kaplan had four hits apiece and Alex Coffey hit a 3-run homer for the winners.
Lucas Marks singled in two runs for the Huskies while Forrest Chadwick hit a two-run double.
