AUGUSTA, Maine — State Sen. Larry Bliss is resigning from the Legislature to take a job out of state.

The South Portland Democrat announced Tuesday his last day in the Senate will be April 15. Unemployed for 16 months, Bliss has taken a job as an administrator at California State University, East Bay, outside of San Francisco.

Bliss is in his second term in the Maine Senate representing South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and part of Scarborough. He also served in the Maine House of Representatives for eight years.

Bliss said he hasn’t been able to find a job since being laid off from the University of Southern Maine, where he was director of the career center.

A special election will be held at a later date to fill Bliss’ position.
