AUGUSTA, Maine — A judge has denied bail for a former Massachusetts man accused of killing and robbing a Maine homeowner before setting fire to the house.
Justice Michaela Murphy made her decision Tuesday during a special bail proceeding after hearing testimony about the crime and about the lengthy criminal record of defendant David B. Silva Jr.
Police say Silva shot 53-year-old Robert Orr, robbed him and set fire to the home in Readfield. He’s charged with murder, arson and robbery. Silva’s girlfriend, who has not been charged, told police that he used stolen jewelry and cash to get heroin.
Defense attorney William Baghdoyan said the girlfriend’s statements were inconsistent. The Kennebec Journal reported that Silva, who was arrested Feb. 10 in Carver, Mass., has yet to be arraigned or to enter a plea.
