Dover-Foxcroft budget advisory committee to meet with selectmen March 29

By Diana Bowley, BDN Staff

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — The Dover-Foxcroft budget advisory committee is finishing its review of the draft municipal budget, which reflects an increase of $178,725, and will present its recommendations to the Board of Selectmen later this month.

The joint boards will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, to discuss the budget. A public hearing on the proposed $4 million spending plan will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7. Both meetings will be held in the municipal building.

As proposed, the $4,028,790 spending plan would be offset by $2,018,153 in anticipated revenues.

Residents will be asked to affirm the warrant articles for the annual meeting on April 30 and will be able to adopt the budget during the annual town meeting on June 14.

In another matter, selectmen Monday were updated about the Vaughn Street Environmental Protection Agency cleanup project. The former Maine Leathers property has been identified as containing contaminated sludge in and around sludge pits and lagoons on the eastern portion of the property. The project will involve consolidating and capping the leather waste products and lead on-site.

Town Manager Jack Clukey advised selectmen that proposals have been solicited for that work and a selection will be made March 28.

The town has submitted an application for a Community Development Block Grant for downtown facade improvements and also plans to apply for a Communities for Maine’s Future grant. The latter grant could help fund proposed improvements to the former Moosehead Manufacturing Co. building and Central Hall, according to Clukey.

An open house will be held for Barbara Moore, who is retiring as town clerk after 29 years of service, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 18, in the municipal building. Lisa Niles has been appointed as the new town clerk.
