University of Maine distance running standouts Riley Masters and Corey Conner have been named second team All-Americans by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Masters, a junior from Bangor, finished ninth in the mile in the NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas, over the weekend. It is the second such honor of his career, as Masters earned All-American honors in the indoor mile last winter.

Conner, a junior from Townsend, Mass., was 11th in the 5,000 meters. She was competing in her second NCAA championship race of the year after running in the cross country championships last fall.

UMaine recruit wins honor

The 6-foot-1 forward from Oyster River High School averaged 19.2 points, 8.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 3.5 blocks and 3.3 steals in leading her high school team to a 14-6 record and a trip to the Division II state quarterfinals. She is a two-time Class I player of the year and also shot 72 percent from the field during her senior season.

Walczak ranks sixth in her graduating class with a 4.0 grade point average.
