Should the Maine Turnpike Authority be put on a diet?

The MTA’s long-serving director resigned in the wake of a scandal in which it was revealed that he gave out $150,000 in gift certificates to restaurants and hotels to various supporters and business acquaintances. Does this prove the MTA is too rich? Should the state work to absorb the MTA into the Department of Transportation, where any excess toll revenues could pay for roads and bridges? Or will a new director be able to rein-in spending?
