Scorer commits to Maine hockey team

Center-right wing Andrew Cerretani, who was the leading scorer at Lawrence Academy in Groton, Mass., this season and a two-time Independent Schools League all-star, has verbally committed to attend the University of Maine beginning next fall.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Cerretani had 21 goals and 29 assists in 31 games for the Spartans.

“I’ve been a coach for over 20 years and he has the best hands and stick skills I’ve ever seen,” said Lawrence Academy coach and former North Yarmouth Academy head coach Kevin Potter, whose list of former players includes Boston College’s Joe and Steven Whitney.

“He’s always around the puck and he’s very, very skilled,” said Potter, who played for coach Terry Meagher’s Bowdoin College Polar Bears. “He’s an excellent playmaker who has great vision. He’s also got a quick release on his shot.”

Cerretani will be a scholarship player and said he chose Maine over “a few other schools,” including Hockey East schools.

“When I visited Maine, I fell in love with the campus and the rink,” said Cerretani, who is from Pelham, N.H. “I liked the buildings and how they’re all close together on campus. I went to a game and loved the atmosphere. And I like the fact the coaches were extremely interested in me and welcomed me with open arms.

“Everything seemed real homey for me. It was a better fit than any other school I visited,” added Cerretani, who used to play for former Merrimack College coach Chris Serino at Malden Catholic High School.

The 18-year-old Cerretani said he intends to work hard to get stronger and faster and wants to become “the best well-rounded player I can be.”

“I can’t tell you how excited I am to be coming to Maine,” said Cerretani, whose coming to Maine is contingent upon his acceptance into school and meeting NCAA eligibility requirements.
