Bowman Constructors acquires Winterport firm, plans to open Brewer office

Bowman Constructors of Newport announced Friday that it has acquired Hardy Construction, a Winterport company.

Kevin Bowman, president of Bowman Constructors, said the acquisition adds two experienced superintendents and four craftspeople to his company along with Todd Hardy, the general contractor who owned the firm.

Bowman Constructors is also in the process of opening a second location in Brewer, which Hardy will head, according to a press release issued Friday.

Among other projects, Bowman Constructors recently completed the 55-unit Volunteers of America senior housing project on Harlow Street in Bangor and is working on the Jefferson Village School in Jefferson and Hilltop Manor in Dover-Foxcroft.

Bills propose raising Maine’s minimum hourly wage

AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Legislature’s labor committee is considering two bills that would raise the state’s minimum hourly wage.

One bill calls for raising the minimum wage each year at the rate of inflation. The other bill would raise the minimum wage to $7.75 an hour on Oct. 1 and to $8 an hour on Oct. 1, 2012.

Public hearings were being held Friday.

Maine’s minimum wage is now $7.50 an hour, which is 25 cents an hour higher than the federal minimum wage.

Yarmouth, Maine-based mapmaker Delorme lays off 15

YARMOUTH, Maine — The Maine-based mapmaker DeLorme has laid off 15 employees, the first cuts the company has made in nearly ten years.

A company spokesman told WCSH-TV the staff reductions are needed to ensure the company can compete in a global marketplace.

The company has been making the transition from paper maps to more digital products.

DeLorme describes itself as a leading provider of mapping products, technologies and data for the consumer and professional markets.
