CAMDEN, Maine — Running into a friend quickly turned into screaming and running from him for a Rockport woman late Wednesday night.

Shawn Richards, 32, of Camden is free on $10,000 cash bail for charges of kidnapping, domestic violence assault, criminal restraint, terrorizing and obstructing the report of a crime or injury. He was released from Knox County Jail on Thursday.

A woman told police that she was driving her car Wednesday near Sand Street in Camden when she ran into her friend and ex-boyfriend Richards. The two got into an argument and Richards took her keys. When the woman took her cell phone out and tried to call 911, Richards took the phone too, according to a police report filed in Knox County Superior Court.

When the woman demanded her phone and keys back, Richards told her she could get them back if she came to his house, so she did, according to the report. She went in to Richards’ home and the man gave her her keys, but held her phone. She followed him into the bedroom, and he slammed the door behind them before shoving her onto the bed, the police report stated. When the woman tried to get up to leave, he shoved her back down. She then started screaming, which is when “Richards threatened to ‘duct tape her mouth shut’ if she continued to scream,’” the woman told police.

“Please don’t kill me,” she told Richards, who kept her there for 2.5 hours, according to the police report.

“I have never been so scared in my life,” the woman told police.

As Richards examined her phone and moved away from the bedroom door, the woman attempted to escape. She made it to an outer door when “Shawn grabbed her by the legs and tried to pull her back into the house. Because of this, [the woman] fell down the steps face first,” the police report states.

The woman kicked at him and ran about 5 feet outside before he tackled her, the report states. She then kicked him in the gut, escaped to her car and drove to the police station.

“[I’m] not sure what Shawn would have done if he got me back in the house,” she told police Wednesday.

Richards faces up to 84 years in prison and fines up to $108,000 for the crimes he’s accused of.
